***Using Volatility Display***
Volatility Display
Volatility Display shows for any stock:
The top line list monthly values for the last twelve months. The next three lines the high, low, and closing price for the same twelve months.
In addition to the monthly volatilities, eight more volatilities are shown in the line below the monthly prices. The first six values (reading left to right) are historical values of volatility. These historical values represent the following time periods: 30 days (1mo), 90 days (3 mo.), 180 days (6 MO), 365 days (12mo), and for the current year to date and for the current month to date. The high and low prices for these periods are shown below the volatilities.
The last two volatility values are the implied and today’s volatilities. The implied volatility is deprived from the security’s options. The value shown is a weighted average of the individual options implied volatilities.
Today’s volatility is based on the price fluctuation of the stock for today.
The last item shown on this line, shares out. (K), is the number of shares outstanding in thousands.

Change the view date and data:
*Move the date in the direction you want, one day at a time, by using the left and right Date Arrows on the bottom scroll bar.
The Price Plot:
*Displays price performance of the ticker you are examining. For each period on the screen (day or week), the high, low and closing prices for the ticker are plotted. The high and low prices are plotted as vertical bars. The top of the vertical bar is the high, and the bottom of the bar is the low. The closing price is indicated by a small horizontal bar on the right side of the vertical bar.
*Candle Sticks display price performance of the ticker you are examining. A solid bar represents a close lower than the open, whereas a hollow bar represents a close higher than the open.
The Price Scale:
*Of the ticker is the vertical scale on the right side of the Price Plot. On an historical chart, the scale that runs horizontally along the bottom of the Price Plot is the Time Scale. The letters on the Time Scale represent months.
*Date and price data is displayed in this section for the ticker being charted. The close, high, low, and open prices will be displayed. Adjacent to each of these prices is the difference in the price between the prior day and the current day, with parentheses indicating negative changes.

CANDLESTICKS
*Candlestick charting is an alternative way of charting price action. Candlestick methodology has long been popular in Japan, where it was developed around 1750 at the beginning of the Rice Market.
*The information used in the Candlestick Chart is identical to the information used in a standard price Bar-that is, open, high, low, and close prices. The illustrations show the difference between the Western bar and the Japanese candle. Another dimension has been added, the dimension of "color", to easily show the change between opening price and closing price.
*That " color" difference is shown as a bar, which is called the Real Body. The difference between the high for the period (day or week) and the Real Body is called upper shadow, and t he difference between the Real Body and the low for the period is called the Lower Shadow. If it an up period, then the body is an outlined open bar. If it is a down period, then the body is a solid bar.
Indicators
Indicators
*The following is the listing of Technical Studies available on the Charting function.
To select or edit these indicators, Right mouse click anywhere on the Chart window.
*Exponentially Smoothed Averages (ESA), Short, Intermediate, & Long Term
*The ESA, Exponentially Smoothed Average, is a price average that smoothes the random price fluctuations that normally occur in a series of daily price data. Similar to the simple Moving Average, it is used to depict the underlying trend of the data. The Exponentially Smoothed Average tends to offer support and resistance -- support in an up-trending market and resistance in a down-trending market. Historically, support and resistance will prevail until a breakout occurs. A price which breaks through an ESA line can be a signal that a trend reversal is taking place.
*Depending on the value of the smoothing constant used in the exponential smoothing formula, the ESA can represent a short-term, intermediate-term, or long-term trend. The longer the time period used to calculate the smoothing constant, the longer the term of the trend depicted by the average.
*All data values in the time series are included in the ESA computation. However, the values are weighted so that only the more recent values are actually reflected in the average. The exponential smoothing formula assigns maximum weight to the most recent data value and successively smaller weights to each prior value in the series. Because these weights decline exponentially with time, older data (data older than the term of the average) does not significantly affect the value of the average.
Moving Averages (MA), Short, Intermediate, & Long Term
*Moving Average is perhaps the oldest and most widely used statistical method applied to stock price data. Primarily, it is used to smooth out short-term fluctuations and depict the underlying trend; the longer the time period used in the calculation, the longer the term of the trend depicted by the average.
*Mathematically, the Moving Average is a simple arithmetic mean, giving equal weight to all data values. Although many different time periods are commonly used, 21 days is considered appropriate for short-term trading and 50 days for intermediate-term trading. For long-term trend analysis, most analysts prefer a 200-day average.
*The Moving Average, like the Exponentially Smoothed Average, tends to offer support and resistance -- support in an up-trending market and resistance in a down-trending market. Historically, support and resistance will prevail until a breakout occurs. A price which breaks through a Moving Average line can be a signal that a trend reversal is taking place.
*These indicators are designed to identify support and resistance levels:
Average Directional Movement Index (ADX/R)
*The Average Directional Movement Index (ADX) is a trend-following indicator devised by Welles Wilder. It is based on the somewhat obscure concept of directional movement and was designed to evaluate the trending characteristics of a market or a security.
*When buying and writing options, different strategies are employed in trending and in trendless markets. A trend-following strategy in sideways, trendless markets is usually frustrating and, according to Wilder, markets exhibit strong trends only about 30% of the time. The ADX helps you avoid trendless markets. This indicator tells you when trending reaches a significant level and trading should be profitable. When a market is not exhibiting trending or directional behavior, this indicator tells you to avoid that market.
*Directional movement is a measure of the net total price movement over a given period of time. Positive and negative directional movements are first determined by summing the daily up and down moves. These values are then normalized by dividing them by the True Range, the absolute value of the total move for the period. The difference between the normalized values, expressed as a percentage, is defined as the directional movement.
*The Average Directional Movement Index (ADX) is obtained from directional movement by use of exponential averages and ratios. The ADX is charted along with a second line, the ADXR indicator, which is a smoothed average of the ADX.
*Look for a rising ADX as an indication of significant directional movement and the beginning of a good trading period. Diminishing directional movement and a poor period for trend-following is indicated when the ADX turns lower.
*Generally, an ADX value above 25 indicates significant directional movement and a good trading opportunity. For your convenience, this level is specified on the ADX/R chart by the horizontal line.
*The ADX/ADXR is best used in conjunction with the Directional Movement Index. When the ADX/ADXR shows that a trend is in force, the Directional Movement Index will show the direction of that trend.
Directional Movement Index (DirMov)
Note
*The Directional Movement Index works well with the ADX/ADXR indicator. When a signal is generated by the ADX/ADXR, indicating that a trend is in force, the Directional Movement Index will show the direction of that trend.
*The Directional Movement Index is the difference between the upside (positive) directional indicator and the downside (negative) directional indicator used in the computation of the ADX/ADXR values. The resulting difference, a positive or negative value that cycles around zero, is simply used to determine the direction of the price trend for which the ADX/ADXR is indicating strength.
*A positive value indicates an upward movement and a negative value indicates a downward movement. For the very short term, the direction of a change can also be used as an indicator.
Money Flow (MnyFlow)
*This indicator measures the flow of money into and out of a ticker. Money flow is similar to the Accumulation/Distribution indicator in that it attempts to measure the supply and demand balance for a ticker.
*Money Flow is computed by multiplying total trading dollars by a factor called the flow factor. Total dollars is estimated by multiplying average price for the period's activity by the total volume for the period. The average price is computed as the average of the high, the low, and the close.
*The flow factor was taken from the work of Marc Chaikin and is exactly the same as the accumulation factor used in the calculation of Volume Accumulation Percentage. The factor is determined from the relation of the closing price to the intraday high and low. If the closing price is midway between the high and the low, then money flow pressure is balanced and the factor is zero. If the day's closing price is equal to the day's highest price, then the flow factor is 1.0. If the day's closing price is equal to the intraday low, then the flow factor is minus 1.0, which is interpreted to mean a total outflow of dollars from the ticker.
*Because this indicator is a summation indicator, the actual values that you see in the indicator column will depend upon how many total days of data are available for summation. If the date you are examining is on the far right of the chart, then TradingExpert uses over 200 periods (days or weeks) of data to arrive at the figure. If that same date that you are examining were in the middle of the chart, then there are fewer periods of data for the summation, and thus there will be a different value.
*However, the actual value of the indicator is of little importance. It is the shape of the indicator plot that is the critical factor. Important are the trends and trend breaks, and non-conformations (highs and lows do not agree) and divergences (trends do not agree) with price action of the ticker
Money Flow Oscillator (MF Osc)
*The Money Flow Oscillator is simply the difference between the current value of the Money Flow indicator and the value some constant number of periods ago. When the Money Flow Oscillator is positive, it means that money flow is increasing over time. When the indicator is negative, it means that money is flowing out and demand is decreasing.
Money Flow RSI (MF RSI)
*Developed by Quong and Soudack, Money Flow RSI is a short-term indicator which attempts to measure the flow of money into or out of a ticker. It is similar to other indicators such as Volume Accumulation Percentage in that both price and volume data are included in the calculation. However, with Money Flow RSI, the resulting value is normalized to a scale of 0 to 100 so that it can be used over a variety of situations independent of the price.
*The price component of Money Flow RSI is the average price of the ticker which is computed each day by averaging the high, low, and closing prices. Money Flow RSI is considered positive on days when the ticker closes higher and negative on days when the ticker closes lower.
*The extent of Money Flow RSI is determined by multiplying the average price by the volume for the day. A money flow ratio is then computed from the ratio of positive money flow, averaged over a specified number of days (10 days works well), to negative money flow, averaged over the same period. This ratio is then normalized by means of the RSI formula which translates the data to a scale ranging between zero and 100. Zero indicates extreme negative money flow, and 100 indicates extreme positive money flow. A value of 50 indicates a balance between positive and negative money, and presumably the forces of supply and demand.
*Money Flow values above 80 indicate a top, where profits will be taken and money will soon begin to flow out of the ticker. Extreme values of 90 and above indicate a situation where overbuying is evident, which is usually followed by a sell-off.
*Values less than 20 indicate a bottom, which is often followed by an uptrend. Money Flow RSI values less than 10 indicate an oversold situation where good buying opportunities can often be found.
*The developers of Money Flow RSI also suggest that divergences between price action and the trend of the indicator can signal a turn. AIQ has found this to be true on the buy side more so than on the sell side. The developers also say to watch for a situation where the indicator does not reaffirm a new high or low in price action. Such a nonconformation is often called a failure swing. This type of signal has greater validity at the extreme ends of the Money Flow scale.
On-Balance Volume (OBV)
*OBV is a widely used indicator developed by Joseph Granville and shows accumulation and distribution action.
*The indicator is computed as a continuous summation of daily volume. On days when prices advance, the volume for that day is added to the running total. On days when prices decline, the volume for that day is subtracted from the running total. On-Balance Volume is different from Volume Accumulation Percentage because there is no weighting.
*OBV assumes that if the price today is higher than the price yesterday, all of today's volume is accumulation. If the price today is lower than the price yesterday, all of the volume is distribution.
*As with the other summation indicators, the actual values that you see in the Control Panel will depend upon how many total periods of data are available for accumulation. If the date you are examining is on the far right of the chart, then TradingExpert uses over 200 periods of data to arrive at the figure. If that same date were in the middle of the chart, then there are fewer periods of data to accumulate, and thus there will be a different value.
*However, the actual value of On-Balance Volume is not important. Important is the shape of the indicator plot, which can show trends and trend breaks, and non-conformations and divergences with price action.
*Signals are determined from divergences and non-conformations. Divergences occur when the trend of price action and the trend of the indicator are in opposite directions. A nonconformation occurs when price action achieves a new high or new low that is not matched by an equivalent high or low by the indicator.
*A break in a well-established trend of the indicator line itself is often followed by a break in prices in the same direction. Divergences between price trends and OBV trends often signal a move in the direction of the OBV trend. Non-conformations between new high or low prices and the OBV line can signal a reversal of the current price trend.
*On-Balance Volume is sometimes used in combination with Accumulation/Distribution. Nonconformation signals generated by these indicators are strongly enhanced when the two agree. If a nonconformation is indicated on both the AcmDis line and the OBV line, the resulting signals are stronger than if evaluated separately.
ParaSAR (Parabolic stop-and reversal)
*Welles Wilder’s Parabolic Time/Price System, usually referred to as "SAR" (stop-and reversal), is to set trailing stops. Each day a new SAR stop level is computed based on that day’s closing price. Note that stop values are valid only for the day on which they are computed. According to the system, the trader should remain long when the SAR is below the current price and short when it is above the price.
*With these values plotted on the price chart, the relationship between price and the SAR stop level is readily apparent. When you are long an exit point is signaled when the SAR switches from below to above the rpice. The reverse is true when you are short. In other words, you should close long positions when price falls below SAR and close positions when price rises above the SAR.
Price Phase Indicator (Phase)
*This price oscillator is used by TradingExpert as a primary filter of Expert Rating signals. For all TradingExpert reports that show confirmed signals, the Price Phase is the indicator used for confirmation. When the direction of the Price Phase agrees with an Expert Rating signal, the signal is considered to be confirmed by the Price Phase.
*The expert system tends to give Expert Rating signals early, anticipating and preceding the actual movement of price. So that you don't take a position too early, AIQ recommends that you wait for a change in direction of the Price Phase before taking the action indicated by the Expert Rating.
*To determine if a Price Phase direction change has occurred on a particular day, move the date back and record the Price Phase values for the two previous days. If the two previous values show a decrease and the value for today is greater than the day before, then the direction has changed to the upside. Conversely, if the two previous values show an increase and the value for today is less than the day before, the direction has changed to the downside.
*The Price Phase is computed as the difference between two exponentially smoothed price averages. The value of this indicator depends directly on the time periods represented by the two averages.
*To determine the appropriate combination of averages for the Price Phase Indicator, AIQ tested a wide range of values. This testing revealed that the best balance between stability and responsiveness was obtained with averages representing 10 and 49 days. Consequently, for the purpose of TradingExpert reports that list confirmed signals (including the Action List and Weighted Action List), the Price Phase is computed from 10 and 49 day price ESA's.
SK-SD Stochastics (SK-SD)
*This indicator is the more classic version of George Lane's formulation of stochastics, and involves two components. The SK component is typically a 3-day moving average of the stochastic ratio as defined by Lane's basic Stochastic formula. SK is again averaged over the same number of days to obtain a double smoothed average ratio called SD.
*AIQ has modified the indicator, which Lane originally developed for futures trading, by lengthening the default value for the moving average to a 10-day average to better reflect stock trading.
*The SK component is always the upper line on up movements and the lower line on down movements. The SD component is the lower line on up movements and the upper line on down movements. With TradingExpert’s default colors displayed, the SK line is green and the SD line is purple.
*The simplest interpretation of this version of the Stochastic is that price trends will reverse when the value of SK diverges from price.
*For timing following a nonconfirmation, buy signals are generated when the SK line moves above the SD, and sell signals occur when the SK moves below the SD. These signals are enhanced if the second average, the SD, has already made the turn in the direction of the signal. When these situations occur at extreme ranges, below 10 and above 90, the SK-SD becomes less reliable as an indicator and should be used only with confirmation of several other indicators in the system.
Stochastic
*The Stochastic indicator relates the closing price to the range in prices for a prior period of time. George Lane, who developed this indicator, determined that 21 days is the optimum period of time for the price range. Hence, the indicator is usually referred to as the 21-day Stochastic. The following discussion pertains only to a stochastic based on a 21-day period of time (or 21-week period of time).
*The 21-Day Stochastic, relates the closing price to the price range from the prior 21-day period. The 21-day price range is the difference between the highest value in the last 21 days and the lowest value. The indicator, expressed as a percentage, is charted on a scale of 0 to 100.
Note
*The term stochastic as defined by Lane, has little or no relation to the real definition of the word, which is "a naturally occurring random process." By industry accepted usage, the meaning in technical analysis terms is defined by the stochastic equation:
*Above 80% indicates an overbought condition, and below 20% indicates an oversold condition. A sell signal is generated when this indicator drops below 80%, and a buy signal is evident when its value moves above 20%. The upper horizontal line on the 21-Day Stochastic chart represents 80%. The lower horizontal line represents 20%.
Volume
*Clearly, volume is the force that drives the market. It is volume that indicates the meeting of supply and demand at a specific transfer price. Volume and the change in volume -- the increase or decrease over time -- is often a precursor to price movement. The analysis of volume is the basis for many of the rules within the AIQ knowledge base that determine the Expert Ratings,.
*On the Volume indicator chart, daily volume is shown by the vertical bars. The line running through represents an exponentially smoothed average of volume.
*Volume is displayed in the data column of the Control Panel in hundreds of shares. What is important is the history of volume for the stock during the period of time shown on the chart.
*It is said that volume precedes price. Look for spikes in volume (high volumes) and where the spikes are relative to the price of the stock. High volume, when the stock is near a lower Trading Band, indicates a possible move upward. High volume, when the stock is near an upper Trading Band, indicates a possible drop.
HIGH/LOW INDICATOR (HI/LO)
*The High/Low indicator is a 5% exponentially smoothed average of new highs (stocks reaching new high prices for the year) minus new lows (stocks making new low prices for the year).
*The High/Low indicator tends to be a leading indicator of major market moves. Look for breaks in the trendline of the High/ Low Indicator and for non-conformations with market indices when they are at extreme values.
*On the AIQ Market Timing Chart for 11/01/94, the Dow is moving sideways in September and October of 1994. However, the trend of the High/Low indicator is down, an obvious divergence with price contributed to the sell signal (ER Down: 100) issued by the AIQ expert system on 11/01/94.

*The value shown is the value of the High/Low indicator for the date specified.
CHANGEABLE constants
*The time period used to compute the average may be changed. The default value is39 and permissible range is 1 to 200 days.
MOVING AVERAGE CONVERGENCE-DIVERGENCE INDEX (MACD)
*The MACD is a two-component indicator based on two exponential moving price averages. Because of the early signals, which can be derived from this indicator, it is regarded by many analysts as helpful in the trading of stock options. MACD is more classic version of the Price Phase Indicator.
*The first component of the MACD is a line, which represents the difference between two moving averages; each computed for a different period of time. This first component is called Price Phase Line. The second component, which is called the Signal Line, is an exponential average of the first component.
*The two lines are charted together on the same time scale. If you have not changed the default color settings, the Price Phase Line is green and the Signal line is purple. You can also determine which line is which by the position of the lines during periods when a definite trend is established. The Price Phase Line is the upper line during upward price movements and the lower line during downward movements. The Signal line, being an average of the Price Phase Line, is the lower line during upward moves and the upper line during downward moves.
*As a general rule, it is considered bullish when the Price Phase Line is rising and is above the Signal Line. Conversely, it is bearish when the Price Line is falling and is below the Signal Line.
*Buy and sell signal are generated by the crossing of the two lines. In general, a buy signal occurs when the Price Phase Line crosses from below to above the Signal Line. A sell signal is indicated when the Price Phase Line crosses from above to below the Signal line.
*An example of a buy signal can be seen on the chart for International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). The stock moved sideways from September through late October of 1994. At the same time, the MACD was making higher lows. On October 26, the Price Phase Line crossed above the Signal Line and continued to rise. This proved to be an excellent buying opportunity.
*Because of its smoothed nature, this indicator can be helpful in highly volatile markets such as the options market. Although generally less effective during narrow, trendless markets, it provides good signals during widely swinging trading ranges and at the conclusion of strong trends.
*MACD is especially valuable for its ability to signal a turnaround following a sharp decline. In this situation, divergences are particularly significant and often predate important market bottoms. Divergences pertain to trends and occur when the trend of price action and the trend of an indicator are in opposite directions.
*In addition to trend breaks, divergences, and Signal Line crossing, it is important to watch for overbought and oversold levels. When the MACD rises above a certain level, the ticker is in an overbought region and reversal is likely. The same is true in the oversold direction.
MACD Oscillator (MACD Osc)
*The MACD Oscillator is computer as the difference between the MACD price Phase Line and the MACD Signal Line. Or, another way of looking at it, the value of the oscillator is a measure of the vertical separation between the two lines on the MACD chart.
*The MACD Oscillator is used as a very sensitive short-term price momentum indicator. When the Price Phase Line is above the Signal Line, Price is moving up and the MACD Oscillator is positive (positive values are those values above the zero line.) If the Price Phase Line is below the Signal Line, price is moving down and the MACD Oscillator is negative (below the zero line).
*The International Flavors & Fragrances chart is for the same analysis date, 12/28/94, as the previous chart which shows the MACD Index. Comparing the two charts, you can see that the MACD Oscillator moved above the zero line on October 26, and stayed positive through most of November--- it is easy to see exactly when the Price Phase Line crossover occurs by using the MACD Oscillator as the value check.
*This oscillator is best used as an early warning indicator. As long as it is moving in the same direction as price, momentum is increasing. When it reverses, it is an early warning that price movement has stalled and momentum is weakening.
RELATIVE STRENGTH INDEX ( RSI) WILDER’S VERSION
*J. Welles Wilder’s original indicator differs somewhat from AIQ’s version of RSI. Wilder’s RSI is computed using a weighed moving average while the AIQ version uses an exponentially smoothed average. Otherwise, the two versions of RSI are identical and are used in the same way to indicate overbought and oversold conditions.
