Run-Time Error 7 - Out Of Memory can mean many different things
in Win95/98. It is a
tricky error to diagnose simply because it can be caused by so
many different reasons.
Without getting too technical, Win95 uses 2 basic types of memory.
The first type of
memory is known as RAM, & it is usually installed in today's
PCs in quantities of 16 MB.
RAM is the amount of physical memory installed on the system, usually
16, 32, 48, 64, 128
&
so on. This type of memory, even if installed in great quantities,
usually is not
enough.
To overcome this, PC's uses what is called Virtual Memory. This
type of memory is
actually stored on your hard drive. Win95 uses a technique called
Dynamic Allocation, which automatically takes a section of your
hard drive & uses
it to store temp data. When
there is not enough physical memory, the system automatically uses
virtual memory.
If there is not enough free space on your hard drive, you might
get this error, or if you
have changed the virtual memory management settings from letting
Win95 automatically
control the size of the swap file, to setting these limits yourself.
Either way, the problem may be that the software does not know
if it is a physical RAM problem or a virtual hard drive memory
problem.
